errado.
ignoring of course iaea safeguards, that is only possible if bomb grade plutonium is produced in the fuel in the first place. weapons grade plutonium is produced in specially designed reactors because of the technical precision required to ensure the purity of plutonium-239. plutonium produced inside power reactors is full of plutonium-240 and plutonium-241 and others totalling at least 45% of the element. these isotopes sometimes undergo spontaneous fission and this tends to lead to pre-ignition, whereby the bomb blows itself apart before a significant amount of energy is released. no plutonium bomb has ever been produced with less than 90% plutonium-239 in it.
the proliferation threat is not reprocessing, but production of weapons grade material in a reactor in the first place. this does not happen in commercial reactors.
tens or hundreds of thousands? no. unreprocessed spent fuel will have decayed to below the activity of the original uranium ore in under ten thousand years. figure 2 shows the generic decay curve for spent pwr fuel. figures such as 50,000, 100,000, or sometimes millions of years get tossed around, but they are more likely to have originated from a random number generator (hyperbole always involves randomly large numbers). the radioactivity of the original uranium ore is generally used as a benchmark since it is what we would be dealing with if it were not for nuclear power. uranium ore is also not especially radioactive and so represents a relativity benign level of activity.
it should also be remembered that radioisotopes decay exponentially. spent fuel does not remain glowing green for ten thousand years at which point it stops being significantly radioactive. throughout the millennia, it is continually decaying, becoming less and less radioactive, less and less hazardous, as time goes on. and because the decay is exponential, most of it happens in the early stages so that the majority of time period is spent at a significantly lower level of activity than at initial disposal and in fact a level that is not especially hazardous at all. compare this to those mercury and arsenic solid wastes from coal burning, which will be just as hazardous in ten thousand years as they are today.
de quanto é a half life desses resíduos (ilw)? 30 anos?

on jan. 18, 2005, the u.s. nuclear regulatory commission decided that depleted uranium is a low level waste - and the du therefore may be transfered to doe for disposition, as requested by the license applicant. (view details)
on sept. 26, 2001, the texas department of health approved the disposal of du counterweights at a land burial facility not even licensed for disposal of radioactive waste, as requested by the license applicant. (view details)
on nov. 5, 1998, a french appeals court, revoking a lower tribunal's decision, ruled that depleted uranium is no waste, but a "directly usable raw material that is effectively used for multiple uses" - and the du therefore may be stored indefinitely in the form of u3o8 in purpose-built storage buildings, as requested by the license applicant. lembro-me pelo menos de 2 gajos que morreram durante a construção das ventoinhas lá na minha zona.... isto fora o que acontece por aí mundo fora.
estes...
agora arranja-me listas desse estilo para as renováveis, por exemplo.
as ventoinhas andam aí há quê? 10 anos?
if we put an end to nuclear activities then we should be able to erase the knowledge that will allow the development of nuclear weapons.
how orwellian! no doubt some of the more authoritarian anti-nuclear types will approve of this idea, but many more will have some aversion to the idea that inconvenient or unpleasant knowledge should be purged from human consciousness, with all requisite burning of books and cleansing of the population.
more to point, this is entirely unworkable. knowledge is not so easily compartmentalised. the basic physics that allowed the development of nuclear weapons has applications everywhere and so there is no way to just delete it. further to that, the first bomb makers developed their knowledge from scratch. it has been done before and it can be done again. attempting to pretend einstein and rutherford never existed will never succeed in actually eliminating knowledge.
